Celebrate Purim at Congregation Beth Israel on Saturday, February 27th
Dust off your love beads and bell bottoms and get ready for Woodschlock: The Jewish-American Tribal Love-Rock Purim Schpiel, a psychedelic take on the whole Megillah with music inspired by Hair, Bob Dylan, the Beatles and more! The schpiel will follow a brief service and Megillah reading at 7:30 p.m. in the Temple. An after-party with nibbles, drinks (no-host bar) and dancing begins in Goodman Hall after the schpiel is over. There is no charge for attendance at the schpiel and party, but we gladly accept donations to the Holiday Celebration Fund to support this type of programming. Congregation Beth Israel is located at 1931 NW Flanders Street in Portland. 503-222-1069 for more info or http://www.bethisrael-pdx.org/.

99.5 THE WOLF – MIKE AND AMY’S SUPER BOWL-ING PARTY AT BIG AL’S IN VANCOUVER TO BENEFIT DOERNBECHER CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL.

Portland’s favorite country radio station 99.5 The Wolf is celebrating the upcoming “big game” with their own “big game” event at Big Al’s on Friday, February 5, 2010. The charity fundraising event is hosted by top rated morning show personalities Mike and Amy, who will broadcast live from the popular Vancouver family fun venue from 6:00 a.m. until 10:00 a.m.

The Wolf encourages local businesses to form bowling teams to take on one another in an eight-pin no-tap tournament for bragging rights, and of course, to support a good cause. Mike and Amy will report play by play accounts and team standings on air. Tournament entry includes bowling, equipment rentals and awards all provided by Big Al’s. In addition to on-air exposure, this event provides local business owners with a chance to partner with The Wolf in supporting a wonderful cause. One-hundred percent of all money raised will go directly to Doernbecher Children’s Hospital. The non-bowling public is also encouraged to come enjoy breakfast for only $.99 and cheer on the “Super” teams. Friday’s event is a warm-up for the upcoming 2010 “Hunt for a Cure” Radiothon in March. Have a pint on us…in the name of science!

Do you enjoy beer? As a Portlander, chances are good that you do. Whether you’re an old-school Pabst drinker or a fan of the latest addition to our brewpub scene, you live in a city that is unparalleled in its love of beer.  We’re looking for beer drinkers of all stripes to assist us with a fun, free beer tasting project.

Seamus Campbell, a local author, is currently working on a book entitled The Beer Trials, which will be published in spring 2010 by Fearless Critic Media, the publishers of the new Fearless Critic Portland
Restaurant Guide http://www.fearlesscritic.com/portland (which named the Green Dragon Portland’s #1 beer program), and The Wine Trials 2010 http://www.thewinetrials.com (the leading guide to wines under $15). Seamus’s book, a guide to tasting and appreciating beers, is currently slated for publication in March. The Beer Trials will include reviews of 250 beers, from domestic lagers to Abbey ales. The book will be promoted at Powell’s and distributed nationwide.

Seamus, along with Fearless Critic editor-in-chief Robin Goldstein http://www.blindtaste.com and Wine Trials co-author Alexis Herschkowitsch, will be hosting a blind tasting experiment this weekend at the Green Dragon. Volunteers will be invited to sample a variety of beers (about a pint’s worth) in exchange for filling out a short survey. The process is expected to take roughly half an hour. The results will be incorporated into the book.
